The Benefits of a Healthy Diet

The food you eat provides energy and nutrients to keep your body healthy. Eating well is also important to manage your weight, blood pressure and cholesterol levels.

A diet is a pattern of eating that you choose to follow. It can be temporary or permanent, depending on your goals and preferences. A healthy diet includes a variety of foods from all groups to get the most benefit.

Most diets limit or remove entire food groups, such as carbohydrates or fats. This can cause nutritional problems and is not recommended, especially if you are pregnant or breastfeeding or have certain health conditions. Speak with your doctor or a registered dietitian before starting any new diet plan.

Having a balanced diet can help prevent chronic diseases, such as heart disease, high blood pressure and diabetes. A diet filled with nutrient-rich foods can also help your immune system function at its best.

Fill two-thirds of your plate with plant-based foods, such as vegetables, whole grains and fruit. Nuts, seeds and dried beans or peas (legumes) are also good sources of protein. Choose lean meats and skinless poultry, and add two or more servings of oily fish a week for vitamin B12 and omega-3 fatty acids.

Avoid foods that are high in calories, fat and added sugars. If you can’t give them up entirely, try to eat them less often and in smaller amounts. For example, instead of having one large chocolate bar, have half a bar or enjoy it as an occasional treat. Kost
