How to Start a Diamond Painting

Diamond painting is a new type of art that has taken the world by storm. This DIY craft is a cross-stitch and paint-by-numbers hybrid, using hundreds of resin rhinestones to create dazzling works of art. It’s easy enough for a beginner to learn and even seasoned crafters enjoy painting with diamonds.

A diamond painting kit comes with everything you need to get started, including a canvas, pen, and tray. It also includes wax to help keep your paints in place, making it a very accessible and relaxing way to create beautiful artwork.

To start a diamond painting, first decide on the design you want to create. You can choose from a wide variety of themes, including animals, landscapes, pop culture references, abstracts, fantasy worlds, and religious scenes.

After choosing a theme, you’ll need to select the right colors for your painting. Many diamond painting kits include symbols charts, so you’ll know which colors you need to use for each section of your canvas. You can also check out the color key on the side of the canvas to make sure you’re using the correct ones.

Once you have chosen your color, dump a small amount of the resin onto the tray. This will help the diamonds line up properly on your tray so that they’re all flat when you pick them up with your applicator. You don’t want to overload your tray or the resins will be a lot harder to pick up and stick on the canvas.

Next, peel back a section of the protective film on the canvas. This will allow you to work in small sections without worrying about the rest of the canvas getting sticky. It’s also a good idea to cover the edges of the canvas with masking tape, to keep them from sticking to the diamonds as they go on.

Depending on the size of your diamond painting, you’ll need to pick up a number of crystals in each color to complete it. It’s a great idea to purchase a larger diamond painting kit with multiple trays, so that you won’t run out of the color you need at any point during your project.

After picking up a few crystals in each color, it’s time to begin your painting! Carefully place each crystal in its assigned color on the plastic tray, and shake it gently to settle them down. You can also place the diamonds on a piece of parchment paper to help them stay in place.

When you’re ready to begin your diamond painting, peel back a small section of the protective film on the canvas. You can do this in small squares or by hand, so long as you’re working in a space that will be protected from dust and debris.

Once you have a few crystals in each color, dip your diamond painting pen in the wax. This is the easiest way to pick up the tiny diamonds, and will help you hold each one as you put it on your sticky canvas. diamond painting
