When it comes to your home’s water supply, having clean, fresh, and good-flowing water is vital. Traditionally, pipes made of copper, steel, or galvanized metal have been used to deliver water from the main pipe to each fixture in your home. However, a new plumbing technology called PEX has become more popular among builders and homeowners because of its sustainability and durability. PEX stands for cross-linked polyethylene, and it’s a type of flexible plastic piping that can bend easily to get around obstructions.
It’s also less expensive than copper piping and requires much less energy to produce. Plus, it’s easier for plumbers to work with because it doesn’t have to be cut and soldered like the traditional metal piping does.
All PEX piping must comply with the same standards as other piping materials to make sure it’s safe for use in your home. This includes a minimum bursting pressure of 100 psi and compliance with the SDR-9 dimensional standard. It should also have a proper readable imprint to show it meets US standards.
There are three types of PEX piping that are commonly used in the US: PEX-A, PEX-B, and PEX-C. PEX-A tubing is the most flexible and is suitable for all home water-supply applications. It uses peroxide to create the cross-links between molecules, which gives it its greatest flexibility and resistance to freezing. PEX-C is cheaper than both A and B, but it is less flexible and has a lower bursting pressure. pex water pipe
