Dad jokes are funny puns and one-liners that fathers tell their kids — they’re the eye-rolling, groan-worthy jokes that make their children laugh (and sometimes their moms and siblings, too). They’re different from regular puns, in that they have a more predictable punch line and an over-the-top cheesiness.
They can also be a kind of weaponized anti-humour, used by dads to teasingly annoy or embarrass their children. In this context, dad jokes may actually serve a pedagogical function, argues professor Peter Gray: By “teasingly striking at [children’s] egos and emotions without ever crossing the line into bullying, fathers help teach them to withstand minor attacks and bouts of embarrassment and not react negatively,” writes psychologist and writer Sarah Hye-Knudson.
Here are some of our favorite dad jokes that might make you laugh or groan:
What do you call a line of rabbits walking backward? A receding hareline. Why does the frog never park illegally? He’s afraid of getting toad.
